Everybody has walked into a very minimalist cafe and not been sure where to sit. "POV: your first time in a fancy cafe" turned that feeling into the most copied clip of the week, and within days the customers on the little table were dogs and cats.
What the clip shows
A bare concrete wall, a concrete bench, and two small round metal discs on bent steel poles fixed to the wall. Someone sits on one of them, knees up, sipping coffee, quite pleased with themselves. A second customer walks in, sits on the bench and sets their cup on the identical disc. It was a table.
Nobody says anything. The first customer glances over, glances down, waits a few seconds that feel much longer, then climbs off, sits on the bench and puts the cup on the table as if that had been the plan. The whole thing runs about 21 seconds from one fixed camera.
How big it got
The trend took off on Instagram and TikTok around 31 October 2026. By 3 November:
- one Instagram reel had passed 169 million Instagram plays;
- another had passed 26 million, and the biggest TikTok we found had 9.6 million;
- creators were remaking it everywhere, nearly always in the same concrete cafe.
We couldn't trace the very first post; Know Your Meme describes the trend as a series of AI-generated memes and points to a TikTok from 1 November, while the earliest Instagram version we found is from 31 October. Many of the remakes openly say they were made with AI video tools, which is why the cafe looks identical from one to the next while the person changes.
Why pets made it better
The human version is about embarrassment: you should have known. An animal removes that completely. Nobody expects a dog to understand furniture, so the joke moves to its dignity: the careful side-eye, the slow climb down, the stare straight ahead afterwards.
It also looks funnier before anything happens. The biggest pet version we found, a Great Pyrenees balanced on the tiny table next to a poodle in a blazer, passed 775,000 Instagram plays in under two days. Cats followed quickly, with a ginger cat next to a long-haired one with a pink bow.
The sound
The biggest reel of the trend uses "Oh Yeah?" by Steve Lacy, the title track of his album released in July 2026, and many remakes use it too. Some pet versions use other tracks, so the sound isn't essential to the joke.
Make it with your pet
Our First Time in a Fancy Cafe template takes one or two photos of your dog or cat and does the rest: the cafe, the table, the coffee and all the timing, plus a made-up second animal if you only add one photo. Breed, face, ears and fur come from your photo, and the video comes with the sound. Our step-by-step guide covers the photo, the caption and the cost, and our comparison of the generators shows which tools work with pets.
