How the viral door prank took off in late October 2026, how big it got, what the pet versions look like and why it's safer as an AI video.

The Closing Door Prank, Explained: Where It Came From and Why Pets Joined In

It takes one door and about ten seconds. Someone runs at it full speed, and it shuts just as they get there. The closing door prank became one of the most copied clips on TikTok and Reels within days.

What the clip shows

One person stands at an open door, usually filming from just beside it, and calls someone from the far end of a hallway. The runner comes at full speed, often grinning. At the very last moment the door swings across. The clip ends with the runner on the floor, or very nearly, and the person at the door losing it.

How big it got

The trend took off in late October 2026. By 3 November:

  • the biggest TikTok we found had 16.5 million plays;
  • the biggest Instagram reel we found had 56 million plays;
  • sports and news accounts were reposting the best fails.

We couldn't trace the very first post. Most of the biggest clips are parents pranking their kids, and many add a line saying no child was harmed.

Then the pets came

Real pets are a different story. In the clips we watched, dogs tend to run straight at the door and skid, or stop and look at their owner, which is funny in its own way. The most viewed real-dog version we found had about 64,000 Instagram plays.

AI versions go further. In one we watched, a ginger cat charges down a hallway, flies at the door with its eyes shut while a tuxedo cat holds it, slides down and lies flat on the floor. Nobody and nothing gets hurt, which is the point.

Why make it with AI?

Running full speed at a closing door can really hurt someone, and that's more true for children and animals. An AI version keeps the joke and drops the risk. It also means you can star a pet, or a friend who lives far away, without staging anything.

Make your own

Our Closing Door Prank template works from one or two photos, with a people version for adults and a pet version for dogs and cats. The step-by-step guide covers the photos, the sound and the cost, and our comparison of the generators shows what the other tools do.
